IT’S JULEP SEASON! MAKE THE SWITCH TO PAPER STRAWS

Water is at the heart of everything we do at Maker’s Mark. Without it, bourbon simply wouldn’t be! That’s why we take water sustainability so seriously – both at our distillery in Loretto, Ky., and, starting this April, with retail partners like you across the country. While our love for Mint Juleps this time of year can’t be denied, the plastic straws traditionally used to drink them add to the rapidly growing problem of plastic pollution in our oceans and waterways.

The challenge:

For the month of April, Maker’s Mark invites you to join us in celebrating Mint Julep Month by replacing your plastic straws – for this iconic spring cocktail and others – with a biodegradable option. With this one small change, you and your customers can help us make a lasting, positive difference for our environment.
Plastic straws are out.
Are you in?

So why juleps?

Aside from being the official drink of a certain widely celebrated horse race, the Mint Julep was actually the reason the straw was first invented. That’s right. In 1888, at the height of the julep’s rising popularity, the straw was invented so people could more easily – and gracefully – enjoy this refreshing, crushed-ice drink. Originally made from rye grass, the first straw was cheap and soft and, well, tasted like grass. But the modern-day straw shortly followed and evolved into the plastic straw commonly used today.

They say the rest is history. But, with your help, we’re hoping to use the Mint Julep to once again change history’s course.
